Do you want to join a nationally recognised team at the forefront of identifying, investigating and disrupting online crime, protecting consumers from frauds, scams and other harms?  Do have experience or knowledge of open-source intelligence or investigations work?  If so, we’d love to hear from you.

North Yorkshire Council is a joint host authority for the National Trading Standards eCrime Team (NTSeCT), a specialist team that investigates, disrupts and prevents online illegal trading activity.  Due to continued growth, we are looking for Enforcement Officers (eCrime Pathway) to contribute to national investigations, protecting consumers and helping disrupt online fraud, scams and other e-crime threats.

Please note, this is a career graded post.  The salary grade at which an appointment is made will be based on existing knowledge and experience.  The job description sets out the required level of knowledge, skills and experience at each salary grade.

Who we are

From counterfeit and dangerous goods to illicit tobacco and large frauds, our core aim is to protect consumers from online harm.  We do this by investigating and disrupting harmful web sites and other online platforms. We also help build capacity within the trading standards profession at a local and regional level, delivering training and best practice guidance so officers are better equipped to gather evidence and investigate online crime.

About the role

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a passion for investigations, technology and public protection to build a career within a specialist national enforcement team.

You will support a range of activities including:

  • Identifying unlawful online trading activity and consumer harm by conducting online investigations and gathering, analysing and developing intelligence.
  • Supporting online enforcement and disruption activity.
  • Working with national partner agencies, local authorities and enforcement organisations.
  • Preparing evidence and reports for legal proceedings where required.
  • Contributing to projects that strengthen the Trading Standards response to emerging e-crime threats including project scoping, stakeholder engagement and performance monitoring
  • Represent the eCrime Team on national and regional working groups, partnership meetings and other engagement activity, promoting the team’s objectives and contributing specialist knowledge and expertise
  • Contribute to the drafting, review and maintenance of processes and procedures, ensuring compliance with relevant legislative, quality and technical requirements.

Role Requirements 

  • Experience, or a sound understanding, of investigative techniques, including evidence gathering, analysis and case development.
  • Experience, or a sound understanding, of open-source investigation and intelligence (OSINT) gathering.
  • A good understanding of the legislative frameworks relating to online intelligence and investigations.
  • Experience, or a sound understanding, of databases and other technology systems that can help support effective service delivery.
