Autism Targeted Support Practitioner

Fixed Term, Full Time

Up to £28,432 per annum FTE

Please note that there are 3 fixed term contract / secondment opportunities available for a period of 12 months. We are also recruiting 1 part time position working 22.2 hours per week for a period of 24 months, please state which position you are applying for when making an application.

The Autism Targeted Support Practitioners will work with a cohort of complex Autistic young people to support sustainable inclusion, through targeted support to both school and family. They will work with a range of professionals to identify needs, create impact for the individual and support future sustainable practice within their academic setting.

The outreach model provides an intensive intervention package, at specific points of transition, ensuring that the children of Essex, Southend and Thurrock can access the services that meets their needs at the right time and forms part of the autism diagnostic pathway. The service wraps around services that currently work with autistic children and young people and complements existing provisions.

The role will require an experienced SEND professional with an understanding of autistic children and young people's needs, as well as being able to support their sensory and emotional mental health and wellbeing. The role requires the ability to build strong networks with schools and external partners, to influence staff, develop sustainable approaches and achieve joint objectives.

Responsibilities:

• To work under the direction of the Strategy Lead for Autism to provide targeted evidence-based support to meet the needs of specific autistic young people and their families as identified by a multi-disciplinary panel, to support their successful engagement in education.
• Support education settings/ schools in the accurate assessment and planning for their autistic young people.
• Responsible for utilising and modelling collaborative and person-centred ways of working to ensure pupil and family voices are captured, valued, and held at the heart of planning for CYP.
• Work directly with families and CYP to develop their understanding and participation in any assessments, planning and decision-making processes in order that their plans and implementation are fully co-produced and understood.
• To ensure families and educational practitioners are more confident in delivering autism specific strategies both in the home and the educational settings and to facilitate a collaborative approach to this between home and school.
• To develop opportunities to embed practice in educational settings to aid longer term sustainable provision.
• To use your experience to advise, negotiate, advocate, and champion the needs of our autistic young people. You will liaise with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure individual support for pupils that ensures successful progress against identified outcomes and positive impact for individuals.
• Support partnership working with other agencies and organisation to provide a consistent and joined- up service experience for young people and their families.
• To maintain up to date records and data using electronic devices and systems as directed and to provide reports as required.
• Responsible for providing regular progress reports, clearly demonstrating improvement in CYP feeling of inclusion within their school community, highlighting barriers and recommending solutions to evidence achievement of positive outcomes.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience:

• Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification, or equivalent by experience
• Be highly knowledgeable in the field of autism, including effective pedagogy for autistic pupils and the support, provision and training available across SET Essex including Autism Education Trust training.
• Knowledge and/or experience of working with children and with ASC and their families in an education, health, or social care setting.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, verbal and written, with the ability to inspire pupils and colleagues.
• Experience of coaching skills, with the ability to coach and mentor professionals across directorates, to develop a consistent approach and support provision for autistic individuals.
• Strong facilitation and mediation skills, with knowledge and/or experience of a range of assessment and person-centred planning tools
• Be highly motivated and have a strong commitment to creating an outstanding personalised provision for autistic young people.
• Have an in depth understanding of sensory needs and sensory profiles.
• Be self-led in ensuring your knowledge and understanding of autism and the SEND Code of Practice is up to date.
• Have a proven track record of delivering high-quality support for autistic individuals.

Please note that the job role requires you to be mobile throughout an operational area. Therefore, the post holder will need to have a driving licence and access to a vehicle, or the ability to meet the mobility requirements of the role through other means.
