About this opportunity 

Commons Registration is a statutory duty of the County Council, and Cumbria has the most registered common land of any county in England.

You will be a part of a team that  maintain the commons registers and process applications to update the registers made under the Commons Act 2006. Principle duties include:

Processing applications made under the Commons Act 2006.

Provide copies of the commons register as appropriate and advice to the public on matters relating to registered common land and town or village greens.

Prepare reports and present reports on commons applications for the appropriate council committee.

Provide support services as required to the inspector at Public Inquiries.

Be aware of current case law affecting commons registration matters, and liaise with colleagues in Legal Services as appropriate.

Contribute to the overall development of the team and its services through project work, training and other activities in order to promote personal development and to effectively share knowledge and experience.

Who we are looking for

The successful candidate will be able to work independently and as part of a small team, with an eye for detail and meticulous record keeping. Day to day work will include use of hard copy Ordnance Survey maps and GIS, and a level of literacy and numeracy is essential. Some training of Council members and presenting to planning committee is expected, and applicants should be experienced and confident in public speaking.

The Commons Registration Service is currently shared between Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness Councils. The post would initially be hosted within Westmorland and Furness Council, although based at Lady Gillford’s House in Carlisle. Once training is completed there would be the option of some home working, and the role also requires occasional travel across the county.
