Sandwell’s Development Planning service forms part of the Regeneration and Growth Directorate. The service delivers the development management function of the council and receives over a thousand planning applications a year, ranging from house extensions to large residential and commercial schemes and investigating breaches of planning regulations.
As well as dealing with day-to-day planning enquiries, the department also has an input into the formulation and monitoring of local planning policy.
The directorate is looking to recruit a Planning Officer who holds a relevant undergraduate degree. Applications from members of the Royal Town Planning Institute, or who are eligible to work towards full membership, are preferred.
The successful applicant will be responsible for determining planning applications in line with Government targets, collaborating with a variety of stakeholders, including members of the public, councillors, developers, and other council departments.
Applicants should evidence that they have sound knowledge of the planning application process and/or have dealt with a range of planning applications in the public or private sector.
Candidates should also demonstrate resilience in dealing with large and varied workloads, where communication skills are vital to making well-reasoned and defensible recommendations.
