One key ambition is to have a highway network where everyone can access opportunities without mobility constraints and people, as well as goods and services, can move around the city safely with minimum delay.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to be part of the Sheffield Highway Network Management Team, specifically within the Coordination team. The role of the Coordination team is to process, schedule, and monitor any Street or roadworks, developments or events affecting the highway, in order to minimise disruption.

As Principal Engineer within the Coordination team, your role will include –

  • Ensuring that all the City Council’s statutory duties and powers in relation to the New Roads and Street Works Act are carried out in an efficient manner and that an effective service is provided for Street Works Promoters.
  • Preparing Traffic Regulation Orders and Notices in connection with the temporary closure of public highway.
  • Liaising with all Council Departments and external organisations such as the Police, Statutory Undertakers, Emergency Services, Street Works Promoters, Developers and Contractors, to ensure the efficient and effective execution of the coordination function.
  • Preparing management reports and attending meetings as the Local Highway Authority representative.
  • Efficiently executing Sheffield City Council’s duty, as Highway Authority, to co-ordinate all works on public highway and managing all Highway licensing applications.
  • Providing an effective service to anyone wishing to work in the public highway under statutory powers, licence, permit or permission.
  • Monitoring and supervising the activities of utility companies and their contractors working in the public highway.
  • Carrying out site visits/inspections in connection with the highway coordination function.
  • Preparing and providing information for senior offices in relation to the Street Works function.
  • Interpreting current and proposed legislation and current thinking in the profession.
  • Contributing fully to the development and improvement of the services provided by the Team, and to take a lead on specified management initiatives and to promote corporate working.
  • Management of the Co-ordination Team and training, development and appraisal of staff, and the control of budgets.

The successful candidate will have a good grasp of current digital technology. They will have considerable experience in dealing with works affecting the Public Highway. They will be used to working with scheme promoters at a senior level on matters that affect the Public Highway They will have a proven track record of building, developing and maintaining partnerships.

If appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
